 45th Annual David W. Smith Workshop on Malformations and Morphogenesis

August 16-21, 2024

We are pleased to announce that the David W. Smith Workshop on Malformations and Morphogenesis for 2024 will be held at the University of British Columbia (UBC) - Vancouver Campus, Vancouver, British Columbia Canada. A 402 hectare campus, surrounded by forests and beautiful beaches on the west side of the city, is located on the traditional unceded territory of the Musqueam people.

Participants should plan to arrive the afternoon of Friday August 16th with registration and a welcome reception that evening. The meeting will conclude late Tuesday with departures planned for Wednesday August 21st.

The closest airport is the Vancouver International Airport (YVR). UBC’s Vancouver campus is easily accessible from the Vancouver International Airport which is approximately 13km (8 miles) away. Taxi, uber, car rentals and public transit are available from the airport (~ 25 minute drive). For international attendees, please ensure you have appropriate documentation (e.g. passport) for entry into Canada.

1. Neural tube Defects

  • Gene/Environment interactions and birth defects

  • Treatment/prevention 

2. Disorders of skeletal morphogenesis

  • Regulators

  • Limb malformations

  • Skeletal dysplasias

3. Craniofacial disorders

  • Neural crest

  • Spliceosomopathies/Ribosomopathies

  • Mandibulofacial/Acrofacial disorders

4. Indigenous Populations, Unique populations

  • Communities/patient/family engagement

  • Conditions defined in, or insights gained from

  • Service delivery as it pertains to dysmorphology

5. Solving unknowns

Recognizable disorders with no known cause

Defining new recognizable patterns of malformations/syndromes

Outcomes or updates of new studies of previously published/described “unsolved” disorders

Patient/family experience for the above

And of course, Mechanisms of Morphogenesis
